True Talents by David Lubar (315 pages)

Cover image for True talentsThe group from Edgemere Alternative School reunites in this sequel to Lubar’s first novel, Hidden Talents. The boys have left Edgemere and returned home and are attempting to hide their hidden talents. This novel focuses on Eddie Thalmeyer AKA “Trash” who has the unusual ability to move objects with his mind. He has been abducted by an evil man intent on using Trash’s power as a weapon. This man also faked Trash’s death so no one is looking for him. Out of the blue, the other boys from Edgemere hear a faint whisper in the wind that reminds them of their friend Trash. This nudge from the past also plants a seed that makes them travel to Philadelphia where they all meet and learn Trash is still alive and being hunted by super-powerful bad guys. Fire-starter Torchie, mind-reader Cheater, death-dodger Flinch, and soul-searcher Martin work with Trash to destroy the villains who are out to get him. In the meantime they must also save their friend Lucky from being brainwashed by the same evil-doers. If you have not read Hidden Talents, this book will still stand on its own!

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry (215 pages)

Cover image for Gathering blueIn this companion novel to The Giver, Lowry explores another society, but this one is not a utopia.  In this society, it is every man for himself, war and violence are common occurrences, death a reminder to keep to yourself.  The novel begins with Kira, a young girl whose mother has died suddenly.  Her father was killed by “beasts” in the forest before she was born, so she has no one.  She returns to her home to find it in ashes, burned to the ground by the villagers.  A particularly vile woman named Vandara has taken over Kira’s land and refuses to let her rebuild on it.  The conflict is taken before a committee of elders and Kira’s land is given to Vandara.  Kira is allowed to stay in the village and is given an honored job as Threader.  She is responsible for repairing and redesigning the Singer’s robe.  The Singer’s robe has the history of the village sewn on it, and is presented at the yearly Gathering ceremony.  Kira learns how to dye the thread to make the necessary colors, but is unable to find blue.  Her friend Matt travels “yonder” to gather the blue she needs and discovers something much more important to Kira’s life while he is there.

Messenger by Lois Lowry (169 pages)

Cover image for MessengerThis companion novel to Lowry’s The Giver and Gathering Blue joins characters from both novels in a new village.  I have to start this review by saying that you must read both of the above-mentioned novels before reading this one!  Matty, who had escaped his community with Seer, Kira’s blind father, is now living in a new village, and is patiently waiting for his true name.  He’s hoping to be named Messenger, since he spends much time traveling between villages delivering messages.  But something ominous is happening to his formerly selfless and accepting village.  The townspeople are becoming greedy and self-centered.  They want to close the village to outsiders.  The Leader realizes he can’t stop what the townspeople want, so he sends Matty on a final journey to deliver the news to the surrounding villages.  Seer tells Matty he must retrieve Kira and bring her to the village before it closes for good.   His trip is full of danger, especially when the Forest comes to life and literally attacks him as he passes through it.  Matty’s hidden gift will come in handy when the Forest seizes Kira and Matt before they can return to the village.  Will they make it, or will evil triumph?
