They build their very own kingdom called Terabithia. The kids at school make fun of the two because not all boys have a girl as their best friend. Leslie dies crossing over to Terabithia and Jess has to cope with the loss of his best friend. He wonders if maybe it is his fault that this event occurred.

Right Behind You by Gail Giles (292 pages)

Cover image for GrannyJordan “Joe” Warden thinks something sinister is going on with his Granny.  She seems to be behind some of the mysterious deaths at Joe’s house and he is sure he saw an evil glint in her eye after she gave him a baby’s gift.  His suspicions are proven true when his parents go out of town and leave Granny to watch him.  She takes him to a convention full of grannies intent on extracting his youth and using it to make themselves young again!  Full of surprising plot twists and silly, yet scary, Granny evilness, this book is quite a departure from the ever-popular Alex Rider series that Horowitz wrote!

A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin (189 pages)

Cover image for A corner of the universeEleven-year-old Hattie is looking forward to spending a lazy summer at home, not going away to camp or trying to make new friends.  But her summer plans change when she finds out that she has a 21-year-old uncle she never knew about.  He has been living at a special school for people with mental disabilities, but the school has closed and he is home for the summer.  Hattie is intrigued by Adam and his spontaneous enthusiasm and she does everything she can to include him in her summer activities.  When she takes him to the local carnival, he panics on the Ferris wheel and things spiral out of control after that.

Crooked by Laura and Tom McNeal (346 pages)

Cover image for CrookedNinth-grader Clara Wilson has a crooked nose.  She feels self-conscious about it all the time, but when fellow ninth-grader Amos MacKenzie expresses interest in her, she forgets about her crooked nose.  She’s had a major crush on him for a while and can’t believe he feels the same way.  This budding romance provides the main storyline for this novel, but major problems arise for each character.  Amos faces the death of his father as well as the wrath of the school’s most threatening bullies, the Tripp brothers, while Clara deals with her mother leaving the family for Spain and the attention of one of the bullies that taunts Amos.  The pain felt by these two teens is real and the frightening ending when the two face the Tripp brothers once and for all will leave you breathless.

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen (374 pages)

Cover image for The truth about foreverWhen seventeen-year-old Macy lost her father to a heart attack a year and a half ago, she closed herself off from most people.  The only friend she had was Jason, who eventually became her boyfriend.  He’s perfect, according to most people.  He gets straight-A’s, volunteers countless hours to community charities, knows several languages, and is very even-keel.  He was perfect for Macy in her fragile state because he doesn’t believe in PDA.  In fact, when he is off to “Brain Camp” for the summer, he breaks up with Macy because she ends an e-mail with “I Love You.”  Who knew those three little words would end her relationship?  Macy throws herself into a new job with a chaotic catering business in order to forget about Jason, and there she meets Wes, a handsome artist with a tortured soul.  The two get to know each other by playing a game of Truth, and they truly don’t hold back.  Soon, Macy begins to come out of her shell and accept others into her life, but will she regret it and be hurt yet again?

Antsy Does Time by Neal Shusterman (247 pages)

Cover image for Antsy does timeWhen Anthony “Antsy” Bonanano finds out that his classmate Gunnar Umlaut has a terminal illness called Pulmonary Monxic Systemia, he creates a “time share” deal in which he, his classmates, and the rest of the school staff donate months of their lives to Gunnar so that he can live longer.  Gunnar maintains a cool demeanor about his upcoming death and even goes as far as carving his own tombstone.  Antsy can’t believe Gunnar isn’t more freaked out by his own mortality, but becomes quite distracted when Gunnar’s supermodelesque older sister Kjersten shows interest in him.  Antsy and Kjersten begin dating, and Antsy continues to gather donations of time for Gunnar.  This is a sequel to Shusterman’s The Schwa Was Here, but you don’t have to read it to understand or enjoy this novel.

The Killing Sea by Michael Lewis (183 pages)

Cover image for The killing seaSarah and her younger brother Peter are on vacation with their parents among the islands of Indonesia.  They’re on a small yacht planning on heading out to sea, weary from just celebrating Christmas.  Ruslan and his father live peacefully on one of these islands.  They awaken on December 26, 2004, and go about their typical business.  Ruslan’s father heads out to the oil tanker where he works, and Ruslan works on some drawings.  However, this day was unlike any other day.  On this day, an earthquake in the ocean sent a tsunami toward Ruslan’s island that decimated everything in its way.  Ruslan sees the giant wall of water heading his way and runs as hard as he can for higher ground.  Sarah and Peter also survive, but are separated from their parents.  With gruesome discoveries of hundreds of dead bodies, rebel fighters who force them to work on “body detail,” and Peter infected with some sort of illness, Sarah and Ruslan must rely on each other to get through this devastating event.

When there is an accident with a ride, Eddie dies trying to save a little girl. When he dies he feels her hands in his- but are they really HER hands? This is a wonderful book that explains that everyone has a purpose and everyone lives for a reason. I absolutly loved this book.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher (288 pages)
