Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George (321 pages)

Cover image for Dragon slippersCreel Carlbrun is very poor.  Her parents have died and she has been sent to live with her equally poor aunt and uncle.  Since they have no money to take care of her, Creel’s aunt comes up with a plan to strand Creel with the local dragon and hope that a dashing knight will come rescue her and marry her.  Creel, more realistic than her aunt, agrees to the plan, but once she meets the dragon, she strikes a deal with him: Let her leave with one item from his hoard and he will not be bothered with fighting knights.  The dragon agrees and Creel chooses a unique pair of slippers from the dragon’s hoard.  Creel manages to make it to the King’s Seat with the intention of working as an embroiderer, and she gains the help of Prince Luka when in town.  Princess Amalia, a horrible girl, notices Creel’s shoes and tricks Creel’s co-worker into helping her steal the shoes - but why would a princess want a peasant’s shoes?  You will have to find out what power the shoes hold when you read Dragon Slippers!

Graceling by Kristin Cashore (471 pages)

Cover image for GracelingIn a land with seven kingdoms where people with unusual talents are known as Gracelings, we meet Katsa, a young woman who is Graced with killing.  Others in the seven kingdoms are Graced as well - with weather foresight, mind-reading, sword-fighting, etc.- and this “gift” leaves most Gracelings as outcasts of their societies.  When Katsa meets Po, a fellow Graceling who has impressive combat skills, she becomes intrigued with him and eventually can’t stand not to be near him.  Her involvement with Po will lead to terrible danger though and she must rely on her Grace to survive. I chose to read this novel because I had heard other librarians across the country singing its praises.  I put it on hold at the public library in November and finally my reserve came through two weeks ago.  I have really enjoyed reading this book and I know that many eighth-graders would enjoy it as well!

Dragon’s Keep by Janey Lee Carey (302 pages)

Cover image for Dragon's keepWhen Queen Gweneth had trouble conceiving a child, she turned to a local witch to use her powers to allow the queen to have a child.  The witch made the queen drink from a large dragon’s egg, which resulted in the queen’s pregnancy.  The true consequences of her actions were realized when Princess Rosalind was born with one dragon talon in place of the ring finger on her left hand.  The queen did all she could to keep her daughter’s disfigurement a secret, but the dragons discovered Rosalind’s claw.  Captured by the dragon Lord Faul and made to be the nursemaid to his four dragon pips, Princess Rosalind was forced to swear never to speak to humans again or the dragons would kill all in her family.  Soon Rosalind learns to love and respect the dragons and even comes to see her claw as a “pretty part” rather than a hideous disfigurement.  Told in a style that fans of medieval fantasy will enjoy, this book is very entertaining.

Matilda Bone by Karen Cushman (167 pages)

Matilda experiences culture shock as she moves from Lord Randall’s manor and becomes a simple peasant, apprentice to Red Peg, the bonesetter.  Here she finds herself alone in believing that prayer and study are the only worthy pursuits.  After being around Peg, a woman who at first seems unacceptable because she is uneducated and seemingly unholy, Matilda sees the good in Peg. She realizes that even people with little education, that do not know Latin, can still be intelligent people.  By living a lower-class life than Matilda was raised allowed Matilda to become more understanding and accepting of others.  The most interesting parts of the book were learning about the techniques of medieval medicine.  They used cobwebs for bandages!
