Cover image for The book of timeThe Book of Time (Book One) - 213 pages; Miss Simer’s Rating: ***; Sam Faulkner’s dad has been missing for 10 days.  Worried, Sam explores his dad’s bookshop looking for clues about his disappearance and he stumbles upon a large stone statue that looks completely out of place.  After inadvertantly inserting a strange coin into the statue, Sam is suddenly transported back in time!  His adventures take him to medieval Ireland where he faces attacking Vikings, ancient Egypt where he must protect the pharoah’s tomb, and eastern Europe during the Renaissance.  All the while, Sam is desperate to find his father, who he believes is being held prisoner by the original Count Dracula.  Filled with adventure and interesting historical details, this novel is sure to thrill - but beware the ending - you must read the sequel to get the full story!

Cover image for The gate of days : the book of...The Gate of Days (Book Two) - 249 pages; Miss Simer’s Rating: ***; In this sequel to Prevost’s The Book of Time, Sam has just discovered exactly where his dad is trapped in time: with Vlad Tepes in 1462.  Vlad is better known as Dracula or Vlad the Impaler.  In other words, he is not a nice guy!  Sam uses the stone statue to travel in time in hopes of gathering 7 coins, which will give him the power to travel to a specific time and place in history - namely to Vlad Tepes in 1462.  His travels take him to Ancient Greece, Pompeii, Chicago in 1932, the Stone Age, and more.  Something is seriously wrong during his travels though; someone else is one step ahead of him and is destroying stone statues everywhere to trap Sam in time!   Will he find his father or will he become trapped in time too?  Find out in this second book of the Book of Time trilogy!

Cover image for The circle of gold : the book ...The Circle of Gold (Book Three) - 288 pages; Miss Simer’s Rating: **1/2; In the conclusion to the Book of Time trilogy, Sam is on a mission to stop the Arkeos man and save his mother from her early death.  When Sam discovers the true identity of the Arkeos man, he is shocked to learn it is someone so close to him!  He also comes to terms with his true feelings for Alicia when she is kidnapped and he must head to Rome in the 1500s and China during the first empire.  Sam’s quest for discovery also unveils the locations of the two Golden Circles and the Eternity Ring.  With these tools, Sam will be well on his way to conquering time travel and all its impurities. This conclusion was somewhat of a disappointment because Sam works alone in this novel, without the help of his father, Alicia, or Lily.

Granny by Anthony Horowitz (170 pages)

Cover image for GrannyJordan “Joe” Warden thinks something sinister is going on with his Granny.  She seems to be behind some of the mysterious deaths at Joe’s house and he is sure he saw an evil glint in her eye after she gave him a baby’s gift.  His suspicions are proven true when his parents go out of town and leave Granny to watch him.  She takes him to a convention full of grannies intent on extracting his youth and using it to make themselves young again!  Full of surprising plot twists and silly, yet scary, Granny evilness, this book is quite a departure from the ever-popular Alex Rider series that Horowitz wrote!

Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers (144 pages)

Cover image for Freaky FridayThirteen year old Annabel Andrews is tired of being told what to do. She is tired of being told to do her homework, clean her room, take care of her brother, and much more. She wishes that she could just be a grown-up so she could eat marshmallows and play on the computer for the whole day! One Thursday night, Annabel and her mom, Ellen, get into a BIG fight about responsibility. Annabel just doesn’t seem to realize how responsible you have to be. Then Friday morning, Annabel wakes up and realizes that she has turned into her mom! Oh, how happy Annabel was! She didn’t have to go to school, and she could FINALLY eat marshmallows in bed, watch TV all day, and not clean up her room. But one thing she did not realize was that she had to act like her mom! She has to drive the kids to school everyday, make breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and put the kids to sleep. Will she and her mom ever get their real bodies back?? I didn’t really like this book that much. The plot was clever, but the way the book was written was quite confusing. This book is okay, but it is not my favorite of all the books I have read.

Tunnels by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams (472 pages)

Cover image for TunnelsAs you can tell from the fact that I haven’t posted a review in almost two weeks, this book took me a while to finish!  At almost 500 pages, it’s definitely not a quick read.  I picked this book up because it is marketed as “an international bestseller” and “soon to be a major motion picture” and I wanted to see if it lived up to its hype.  For me, though, it did not.  It seemed to be a knock-off of other more popular stories including The City of Ember and Gregor the Overlander.  The premise is that a boy and his father enjoy digging tunnels underneath their England town only to discover a hidden city beneath the ground.  The underground city is dangerous and full of evil-doers who do not want to be revealed to the “topsoilers” above.  The boy, Will, and his friend, Chester, delve deep into the underground city searching for Will’s father, who has gone missing.  The story doesn’t move at a quick pace, so I found myself losing interest.  It wasn’t my favorite - but there are a few students who have read this and loved it!  So, you’ll have to read it for yourself to make an informed decision!

Airhead by Meg Cabot (337 pages)

Cover image for AirheadSixteen-year-old Emerson Watts could care less about the gorgeous popular people at her high school.  In fact, she’s happiest when she’s spending her time playing the video game Journeyquest with her best friend Christopher.  When her celebrity-obsessed younger sister insists that she attend the grand opening of a Stark megastore nearby, Em is forced to go with her.  A bizarre accident while at the store leaves Em in a coma for over a month, and she awakens to discover that she is no longer herself - literally.  Instead, she wakes up in the body of teen supermodel Nikki Howard!  How can this be?  Trying to suddenly be a supermodel is not going to be easy for Em, but her parents have a $2 million deal with the Stark megastore to not admit that Nikki Howard is actually Em Watts.  This is a fun Freak Friday-ish story that left me a bit disappointed when I got to the end only to discover I have to wait for the sequel to find out how Em will truly handle being Nikki Howard.
